BRUTAL ATTACK ON KAILASH SATYARTHI Eminent Child Labour activist and Chairperson of Global March Against Child Labour and Global Campaign for Education Kailash Satyarthi who was leading a group of activist and parents was brutally attacked in Colonelganj Tehsil of Gonda District in Uttar Pradesh of North India. Acting on complaints of 11 parents and accompanied by 4 parents (two mothers and two fathers) Satyarthi approached the district administration which sent the Sub Divisional Magistrate to conduct a raid in the Great Roman Circus which is camping in Colonelganj. Our reports shows that children in hundreds were being cruelly treated and exploited in this circus. However when the raid started, the entire administration instead of facilitating our team led by Kailash Satyarthi, connived with the circus owner to offset the entire exercise. The circus owner with his men started attacking the team with lethal weapons like knives, iron rods and even pistols. The entire team was brutally attacked. Satyarthi who was leading the team sustained serious head injuries and has been bleeding profusely. One of his legs is fractured. He has sustained injuries throughout his body. He miraculously escaped. Had they pressed further they would have been killed by now. Satyarthi’s son and several others sustained serious injuries. A foreign woman photo-journalist was also beaten up and her camera was smashed. They are now rushing to Lucknow for medical aid as they cannot afford to wait in the vicinity as anything could happen. Their lives are in danger. Till now several of the children whom the team had gone to rescue are still stuck in the circus. Many parents are also in captivity. We demand that the government of UP should immediately act for release of all the children and parents kept in captivity. The Government should immediately arrest the culprits. We demand that the Indian Government including the President of India, Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister take note of the seriousness of the matter and give Mr. Satyarthi adequate police protection and security as there is a threat to his life by the circus owner. The circus owner has openly threatened that he will eliminate Kailash Satyarthi. Keeping in view his stature, national and international standing the government should take serious note of this and act immediately.
